Somewhere in the South of France in the late 1970s, someone took a humble fishing stool, turned it sideways in the sand, and created the simplest form of beach comfort: a backrest.
My father was one of them.
Every summer, he brought his backrest to the beach. No umbrella, no cooler, no chair with twelve compartments. Just his towel and “ma chaise.” That was all he needed. It was light, compact, and it gave him just enough support to sit comfortably for hours, soaking up the sun, chatting with friends, reading, or doing absolutely nothing, which was kind of the point.
For years, I watched him unfold that same backrest, year after year. He never replaced it, never upgraded. He didn’t need to. It became part of our summers as essential as the sea air or the smell of sunscreen.
Fast forward to California. Here, the beaches are just as beautiful, but everyone’s dragging furniture to the sand. Giant chairs, bags filled to the brim, setups that feel more like moving day than a day off. And I kept thinking: we don’t need all this. We just need what works.
So I reimagined my father’s backrest lighter, softer, and made with care. La “Chair” was born. It folds flat, fits in your tote, and weighs just 1.8 lbs. Made with recycled aluminum and organic cotton, it’s a simple solution for people who want to enjoy the beach, without the bulk.
From the Mediterranean coast to the Pacific, this is a little piece of the past, made for right now.
I hope it becomes part of your beach ritual, the way my dad’s was part of mine.
